Thread 17 of 17 | | Thread Starter | | | martink | Sample Gantt Charts PleaseI have been over the PSDP many times now and have adopted it as my standard. In section 4 of the Project management PDF it states that there are 3 sample MPP's supplied with the templates. Is this true. I was hoping not to have to type them out so if there are samples available it would be appreciated... , , Cheers, , Martin Down Under | 1 Reply: | mprestwood | I know this is an old post but I wanted to add something to it in case someone searches here. Yes, we do have sample Gantt charts available in the PSDP private area. They were added sometime after this post so I guess it's good that I waited till now to answer. |

Thread 12 of 17 | | Thread Starter | | | Terry | Appreciate your thoughts and help on processHello,, , I got to this site while looking for processes on developing software. I work as a Director of HR, and in my position, I often find myself involved in various aspects of software projects from a business perspective. We have had our share of frustrations and failures with both internal and outsourced projects. Allot of people point the finger for failure at the ôprocess.ö I sense that having an understanding of what significance process has to good or bad projects will help me with the areas of my job that coincide with our software initiatives. Most of what IÆve seen appears to be written from a technical perspective, and because I might be labeled by some as technically challenged, I have difficulty wading through the content. Then I found this site. The reading IÆve done so far on PSDP is fairly intelligible to me. While I donÆt understand many of the concepts, itÆs a starting point. Expect to see questions from me for the sake of clarification on this process and to get f... | 1 Reply: | mprestwood | Welcome Terry. Thanks for the kind words on PSDP. I do appreciate them. :) |

Thread 11 of 17 | | Thread Starter | | | Leonard | PSDP QuestionsWell IÆm back with more questions. IÆm now reading the project manager part of PSDP. It's been pretty enlightening. Here are my questions:, , , [*]6.3.3 Requirements Phase Paths #4 û You state, ôUnless forbidden by the agreement, the development team continues on to the design phase while waiting for both revision/approval of the requirements specification from the end user participants and the Go/No Go decision by the executive sponsor.ö If youÆre waiting for revision/approval from the end user participants and a Go/No Go decision by the executive sponsor, how can you move into the design phase?, , [*]6.4 Design Phase Tasks û Overlapping Phases with the Design Phase. You discuss overlapping of initial coding with design phase. Then you say that the project manager must take care not to rush into the initial coding and a way to guard against premature coding is to do proof of concepts. In 6.3 Requirements Phase Tasks, you indicate that this phase is where proof of concepts ... | 1 Reply: | mprestwood | Leonard:, , Good questions! Here are my replies:, , , [*]The design phase contains two sub-phases: general and detail design. You can proceed with the general design phase and even parts of the detail design. Remember, phases often overlap so the development team should have already started design at this point. So, really we're talking about continueing with design., , You want to keep the project moving. The only exception is when t... |

Thread 10 of 17 | | Thread Starter | | | Leonard | Scott Wehrley & feasibilityI am a little unclear on some of the points made in Scott's Feasibility Revisitted in the newsletter, the first being where he talks about paths & checkpoints. He says that an informal feasibility can be delivered verbally or via e-mail. Prior to that Scott said that when a feasibility study is delivered to a customer, it serves as a documented understanding of the project scope and needs. Yet, an informal feasibility study can be delivered verbally. , , Elsewhere, Scott says that after the customer has had a chance to review the feasibility study, he has an opportunity to say No to the project, reduce functionality, scope, etc. Does this infer that cost of project can be determined at this juncture well enough to give a customer a quote so he can make decisions?, , Finally, in robust, is the requirments phase already accomplished when the feasibility is delivered?, , thanks | 2 replies. Last post: | Leonard | thanks scott - , , Even with small projects, it's amazing how things can be misinterpreted and create far more trouble than the project is literally worth. I assume that you have the customer sign an agreement and in the agreement it is stated what specific work will be performed. This would then be your documentation., , By the way, I truly appreciated your article. It actually was a good interface to what I've read so far of PSDP. |

Thread 9 of 17 | | Thread Starter | | | Leonard | iteration size - software sizeNew to the site and have been reading with interest the PSDP document. There's a chart (3.6.4 fixed bid types)that outlines recommended fixed-bid types for each iteration size and desired quality. Is software size a factor in producing a fixed bid. If so, how? , , Anyone on this board reading PSDP or considering using it? Why? | 1 Reply: | mprestwood | >>...Fixed Bid Recommendations...software size..., , Software size does play a part in fixed bids, but not directly. Software size helps determine the target iteration size. Target iteration size is what's used with the recommended fixed bid type. |

Thread 8 of 17 | | Thread Starter | | | Terry | PSDP and CultureIn the Overview of draft 2 of PSDP, Section 2.6, Culture, it seems to infer that the culture of a company has a lot to do with whether a project is considered a success or failure. IÆm confused by this. IÆd like to know how a project that takes twice as long and/or costs twice as much to complete can be considered a success or moderate success. Let me state, my company has had its share of delayed, over-budget IT projects. Beginning a software project that is supposed to take 5 months and cost $500,000, and ends up being completed 10 months later and costing $1,000,000, would not be considered a success. Even if the technology is everything wished for when finally delivered, executive management would hardly think of this as success, but rather an example of gross mismanagement or incompetence. Does this mean that if our company had a different culture, twice as long and twice as much would be acceptable? What am I missing?, Terry | 3 replies. Last post: | mprestwood | >>Inception-based fixed bid: Are you suggesting that while the client may benefit from a bid at this point, the developer could suffer?, , Actually, I was saying that you should not do inception-based fixed bids because they are too risky. Too many unknowns., , , >>What I am getting at is how does a company know that a developer doesnÆt really have the experience to do a certain project and thatÆs why a fixed bid is not given until afte... |

Thread 6 of 17 | | Thread Starter | | | Badzooka | PSDP vs. RUPI almost forgot, I also want to know how PSDP stacks up against RUP? | 1 Reply: | mprestwood | The RUP is not a process standard; PSDP is a process standard. Rational Unified Process (RUP) was started as the Unified Process by Rational. However, it didn't fly too well and Rational pulled it strictly in house and RUP is now a software product. |

Thread 5 of 17 | | Thread Starter | | | Badzooka | PSDP vs. eXtreme ProgrammingI don't know much about eXtreme Programming (XP), but from what I've read, it seems interesting. How does it compare to PSDP? | 1 Reply: | mprestwood | XP is intereting and I do recomend that you read and study it. However, I think it goes too far in several areas. For example, it "attempts" to claim to throw out process in favor of talent and then presents a new process heavy in planning. I do like that it drills into a JAD/RAD type approach (very acceptable) and is iterative centric (like PSDP)., , XP is also way too negative. Every article and book I read about XP portrays other processes as... |

Thread 1 of 17 | | Thread Starter | | | Mike Prestwood | Web AdditionsWith the next release of PSDM, the following two concepts will be introduced:, , Design Specification Web Allowance, For web sites, the Design Specification (the detail design) should contain page layout specifications. You should identify and define each page type., , Technical Solution: Web Sites, For web sites, the technical solution should contain a "story board" or "site map". This is used to identify every page in the site and to establish each page's hierarchy. This helps to establish scope. The type of each page should also be specified.
