 Mike Prestwood | New Board Software!{Too Long} | 5 replies. Last post: | mprestwood | Hi Mary,
Funny you should mention dedicated servers. Yesterday, Sunday, we completed our move to a dedicated server so now the website should be much more enjoyable to use. I was just getting ready to start a new thread and mention that. We are still optimizing the new server but we should be stable by the weekend. (Stable meaning we are done optimizing and securing.) |

That way you can purchase your programming toolset for around $100 + the price of the class, which should be around $50 or less. That's around $800 of software for around $150.

Mike Prestwood | New Message Board SoftwareHi all,
I spent today updating our message board software. Now you can reply to the middle of a thread. Some message board software use this approach and some use our old approach. I like this new approach because when you reply to a thread it "feels" like you are replying to the whole thread and someone who posted before you could get hurt feelings because they think you are talking about them.
I also enhanced some of the display and formatting.
Enjoy! | 10 replies. Last post: | mprestwood | Hi all,
This morning I coded a bit on the search capabilities for these message boards. I applied the same search capabilities for KB posts for MB posts.
You can now...
search by an exact phrase, all words, or any words
seach replies correctly. Fixed a bug where reply searches didn't always include replies.
Defaults to a wider search that now includes the post body text.
Simplified look and feel too.

I visited other communities and I noticed many of them simply show posts on their home page so I thought that was better than the cluttered options we were showing. So, now your home page lists your most recent content. | 1 Reply: | rt | It is better., |

Mike Prestwood | New menuYesterday I deployed a new menu. The new menu has expanded options on the Community menu and I consolidated all the service and support menus into one I.T. Services menu. I think this strikes a better balance between business website and community website.
What do you think? Also, any suggestions on changes? | 1 Reply: | Andy.B | I like it. i thought the old one stressed Prestwood's business too much. This one is more balanced. |

Mike Prestwood | New 'All Groups' Random Thread LinkToday I added a "Random MB Thread" to the main message board menu. This link displays a random message board thread from "all threads". Sometimes I like to review old threads just to keep my knowledge up. During this review process, I sometimes add to the threads, but it's mainly a study tool for me.
This compliments our group message board "Random MB Thread" link we added a few months ago. Now you can display a random thread from all groups or from the group you're within.
To browse all threads randomly, go to the main message board overview page and select "Random MB Thread":

Mike Prestwood | Feature Survey: Attach Files to PostsShould I add the ability to attach a file to a post?
Right now you can insert images and code into a post but you cannot attach a file. If I add this, you'll be able to attach a PDF or zip file to any post. Is that a needed or wanted feature? | 1 Reply: | Wes | Mike,
I can think of one use-case where the ability to attach a file to a KB post would be useful:
Suppose somebdy writes an article, say about a particular Delphi technique. Being able to add a zip of a small Delhi demo project would be very handy. (Naturally, this would apply o other languages/tools.
For message board posts, I'm not so sure. If a reply warranted a small sample project, that should probably first go in a... |

Mike Prestwood | Message Boards Back up! Sort Of...The message boards are up and running on our new server. Enjoy!
Our server move is nearly complete. The only two things we have left to do is to move our certificate and turn on our "who's online" scripts. | 2 replies. Last post: | mprestwood | No, I'm not happy at all. The new server farm I chose is very skimpy on features. The website is up and usable when it's not slow so feel free to use it. I'm going to switch "yet again" this week!!!!!!As for the visual changes, yes, I did take the opportunity to implement a few of the suggestions I've gotten. Mike Prestwood | New Message Board LookHi all,This weekend I deployed a new message board look and I'm interested in your thoughts. New Overview main page - gives easy access to most popular data (boards, recent threads, and no reply threads)., No groups on left menu - the left side menu was getting too complex so I removed the links to groups in favor of a list on the overview page. Now you don't have to scroll down to go to your favorite board., All Topics (the old main page) is now an option in the left side menu., Updated text.Let me know what you think!| 9 replies. Last post: | Andy.B | I really like the new color changes. At least I think they're new. I like the blue and green. Pretty nice. The use of gray seems to be up too. That's a good thing. |

Mike Prestwood | New Quote Post Feature! Now you can quote a particular thread post as part of your reply. Check out the new Quote option that is part of every post. I also cleaned up the thread view so that it looks a bit cleaner and contains more white space. Each post of a thread is now separated from the other replies and the thread starter always gets a white background (the rest alternate between light gray and lighter gray). Enjoy! | 8 replies. Mike Prestwood | Happy St Patrick's Day!Happy St. Patrick's Day all!Origin...From history.com, St. Patrick is believed to have driven the snakes from Ireland. Once a pagan himself, St. Patrick is one of Christianity's most widely known figures. The modern secular holiday is based on the original Christian saint's feast day also thought to be the date of the saint's death. In 1737, Irish immigrants to the United States began observing the holiday publicly in Boston and held the first St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City in 1766.Today, the tradition continues with people from all walks and heritages by wearing green, eating Irish food, and attending parades. St. Patrick's Day is bursting with folklore; from the shamrock to the leprechaun and to pinching those that are not wearing green.| 3 replies. Mike Prestwood | New Website HeaderToday I finished simplifying our website header. What do you think? Is it better?Specifically... The top pull-down menu and tabs are now just a menu where the tabs were. The date at top of the page when you're not signed in is gone. When you are signed in, the Welcome YourName is now smaller. The website identifier and stats are now moved to the bottom of the page. The goal of these changes are... It is intended to simplify how much stuff is in your face at the top of the page. It is intended to bring out "more" the content on the page you are looking at. I want visitors to notice and use the pull-down menus more. I think we accomplished those goals. Do you agree? | 3 replies. Last post: | mprestwood | RT: By the way, how did you like the last two eMags? Did you take a look at them?
